On Sunday, 3rd of December, 2023, dictator president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, held a referendum which sought the approval of the Venezuelan people to annex the Essequibo territory and make it part of Venezuela – by force and without consultation with, or the approval of, the Guyana Government. According to the National Electorate Council of Venezuela, over 10 million voters turned up to the polls and over 95% voted yes to all five of the following questions:
It has been taught in Venezuelan schools for the last 50 years or more that the Essequibo belongs to Venezuela and that the British stole it from them. But when Venezuelans wanted to visit the Essequibo, they made sure they got their passport stamped. They learned in theory then that the Essequibo belongs to Venezuela and in practice that it belongs to Guyana. This causes serious mental crosscurrents in their minds.
Maria Coria Machado, Venezuela’s political front runner and leader of the main opposition party which is expected to challenge Nicolas Maduro for the Presidency in October 2024, has condemned Nicolas Maduro’s December 3 referendum which seeks public support in annexing the Essequibo. But she has chosen her words very carefully and wisely. On one hand, she seems to want to send a message of peace and respect for international law to the Guyanese Government and people, but at the same time, she has to avoid being seen as a traitor to the Venezuelan people who were erroneously being taught since primary school that “the Essequibo belongs to Venezuela.”
Maduro’s philosophy right now seems to be, “if I’m going down, I’m taking some people down with me.” And those include leaders, civilians, and soldiers in both Guyana and Venezuela. Since the Chavista took office in 2013, he has done nothing good for the people of Venezuela. He has heartlessly overseen mass migration, unprecedented inflation of the Venezuelan currency, medical and food shortages, and the overall suffering of the Venezuelan people.
Venezuela has won its referendum aimed at annexing the Essequibo. Whether they actually won or they rigged it is hard to tell. Venezuela’s National Electorate Council announced that 95% of the voters voted Yes to all five questions.
A few weeks ago, President Ali, along with a team consisting of GDF personnel and others, flew via helicopter to the Pakaraima Mountain ranges bordering Venezuela, planted a flag pole, and hoisted the Golden Arrow Head in a show of resistance to Venezuela’s claim of the Essequibo.

It is unlikely that the current Brazilian government, headed by Lula Da Silva, will give military support to Guyana in the event of an invasion by Venezuela. In fact, “unlikely” is a bit of an understatement. It is almost certain that Brazil, on its current stance and trajectory, will render any sort of military assistance to Guyana in the event of a Venezuelan incursion into Guyana.
There’s just about three days left before Venezuela’s 3rd of December referendum which seeks to ratify the support of the Venezuelan people for forcefully annexing the Essequibo county of Guyana and making it into a new state within the country of Venezuela. While the Guyana Government has petitioned the ICJ to issue a ruling that confirms the illegality of such a move, and the court is scheduled to do so on Friday, December, 1, 2023, president of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, has said that that won’t stop him from flooding the Essequibo with Venezuelan soldiers and civilians and demarcating new boundaries for Venezuela after the referendum.
Brazil’s largest and most reputable media house, Globo, has officially confirmed on the afternoon of Tuesday, November, 29th, 2023, that Brazilian military reinforcements were being sent to the border between Venezuela and Brazil and Pacaraima to protect the citizens of Brazil in the event of a war between Venezuela and Guyana, or if Venezuela invades Guyana with low to no resistance.
The Brazilian Army went on alert in the early hours of Saturday, 25th of November, 2023 after receiving intelligence information about a possible intention to invade Guyana from Venezuela, which would require the passage of troops through Brazilian territory. As a precaution, the High Command began the emergency mobilization of troops to the border.
While the failed Chavismo economic policies have put millions of Venezuelan citizens on the breadline, and sent millions more fleeing the ongoing economic crisis to the shores of various nations around the world, the new front runner in Venezuela’s political race, Maria Corina Machado, is the hope millions of Venezuelans desperately cling to — the redeemer whom they hope will return the oil capital of the world, the once most glorious, bright and shining star of South America, Venezuela, to the heights of its former glory.
As of today, 26th of November, 2023, exactly one week is left before the Maduro Regime executes is referendum whereby Venezuelan citizens go to the polls to vote on whether or not they want the government to annex the Essequibo county of Guyana into Venezuelan territory. The Venezuelan military has been activated and put on full alert. Its mandate is to “defend the Essequibo” after the presumably successful December 3 referendum.
For far too long, the Guyana Government has simply shrugged at the thought of Venezuela invading the Essequibo and occupying it, but in recent days, they seem to be taking it a bit more seriously. Vice President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, in a press conference yesterday, 23rd of November, 2023, said that all options are on the table for protecting Guyana from a Venezuelan invasion of the Essequibo, and this includes use of force.
In this context, Lula works to avoid an escalation between Venezuela and Guyana. The Brazilian president sent his main foreign policy advisor and de facto foreign minister, Celso Amorim, to Caracas to talk with Maduro.
Another rumor which recently started to circulate is that the the Lethem Trail and Kurupukari Crossing will be closed today, 24th of November, 2023. This publication wishes to advise that, as of today, 24th of November, 2023 at 12:00 Noon, there are no plans in place by the Government of Guyana to close the Lethem Trail or Kurupukari Crossing.
“Brazil made an exhortation, with all other countries, for understanding, the diplomatic and peaceful solution of disputes. I had the opportunity to say that Brazil strongly supports negotiations, understandings and arbitration, with appeals to international courts, such as the Court of The Hague, whenever possible”, said the chancellor.
Venezuela has scheduled a referendum for December 3rd regarding the possibility of annexing the Essequibo region. The territory in question is part of Guyana, meaning the situation could cause a war between the two countries. Therefore, Itamaraty diplomats are already observing the situation and looking for ways to maintain peace.
A Guyanese citizen presently residing in Brazil has weighed in on the existing border controversy with Venezuela and the ever increasing threat of war. According to Mr. Wayne Augusto Mann, it will not be a good idea to engage the Venezuelan military in combat by putting up a resistance since Guyana has a very small number of soldiers and people and little to no weapons, tanks, and other military equipment. Mr. Mann advises the Guyana Government to use wisdom instead to take Guyana through this existential crisis.
As tensions between Guyana and Venezuela are at an all time high, and Venezuelan military presence ramps up at the Guyana/Venezuela border, residents living in border towns are experiencing increased anxiety and fear.
The Guyanese Government is grossly incompetent where it comes to defense. There is no plan of action, no contingency plans, no mutual defense arrangement, and no material military equipment acquisition. It’s mostly believing in hopes and prayers that the western world comes to its aid…which they might, but at what cost to the people of Guyana?
The Guyana Government, through the Guyana Defense Force, has confined all GDF officers to remain within the country’s borders as of yesterday, 16th of November, 2023. This move came as tensions between Guyana and neighboring Venezuela intensifies, nurturing fears of a possible war between the two countries. Further, the GDF is ramping troops and military equipment near to Guyana’s border with Venezuela.
An American evangelist and philanthropist, who has made his life purpose traveling around the world spreading the word of God while doing acts of charity, has crossed over from Brazil into the Rupununi Savannahs of Guyana. He, along with a young Brazilian apprentice, has been staying for the last week or so at the Takutu Hotel in Lethem.

A centuries-old cold war between the countries of Guyana and Venezuela is heating up and taking new shape and form. Since the mid-1700’s, then British Guiana and its western neighbor, Venezuela, have traded a war of words, and sometimes even a gunshot or two, over the Essequibo county of Guyana. In 1899, the Paris Award settled the dispute in favor of the British Empire, giving the Essequibo, the region west of the Essequibo river up to the mouth of the Orinoco River, to Guyana. Official borders, which consists of the Schomburgk line between Guyana and Venezuela, were drawn up and boundary markers were placed at the border line between the two countries.

Guyanese can now breathe a sigh of relief. The Organization of American States (OAS), via its Secretary General, Luis Almagro, today, November 1st, 2023, during a meeting with Prime Minister Mark Phillips, reassured its firm support for Guyana in Guyana/Venezuela border controversy.

Since the discovery of humungous reserves of sweet light crude off the shores of Guyana in 2015, a sleeping monster has once again reared its ugly head. The Guyana/Venezuela border dispute dates back centuries but was settled by the British through the Arbitral Award of 1899 which handed the disputed territory to Great Britain in what was then British Guiana.
On the 25th of September, 2023, I departed the city of Georgetown, Guyana, South America and headed for the town of Lethem in Region 9. It’s was a long and somewhat arduous journey of about 600 kilometers, but also a fun and enjoyable one. Since this was the first time I was driving the trail, this experience puts me in a good position to write this guide for persons who are desirous of making the Georgetown to Lethem road trip for the first time.

I first heard stories of the Charlie, Charlie game in the year 2015 while I was staying at the Takutu Hotel in Lethem, Region 9. A student of the St. Ignatius Secondary School was talking about it. She said that students would place two pencils in the form of a cross over a piece of paper with alternate sides of the paper bearing the words “yes,” and “no.” The students would try to summon an allegedly evil spirt by the name of “Charlie.” They would say something like “Charlie, Charlie, are you there?” or “Charlie, Charlie, can we play?” or something similar.
This Amerindian Heritage Month message was published in September, 2020 by the South Rupununi District Council. Three years later, the message is just as relevant and just as beautiful. We decided to republish it in 2023 in recognition of Amerindian Heritage Month 2023.

Police in Region 9 are investigating a tragic incident which resulted in the death of a Region 9 teenaged girl yesterday, 4th of September, 2023. The victim is identified as 17-year old Bella Douglas of Sand Creek village, South Central Rupununi, a student who had written her CXC exams this year passing with good grades. The incident occurred at around 08:45 am at a culvert along the Sand Creek Village main access road.
A young man is now battling for his life and a family is in a state of distress after a 32-year-old man allegedly doused the face of a 19-year-old youth with an acid mixture causing him severe burns. According to the family of the victim, 19 year old Lorenzo Fredericks left his hometown of Lethem, Region 9 to work in an interior region in Mahdia, Region 7, several years ago. On the 28th of August, 2023, he got into an altercation with the suspect, 32 year old Joshua Mangar, who allegedly doused the youth with an acid mixture while he was asleep later that night.

Inquiries disclosed that the driver of the car, 17-year-old Daveanand Singh, was speeding east along the northern side of Resource Public Road at Canal No. 2, West Bank Demerara when he apparently lost control and crashed into the back of a motor lorry which was parked on the northern parapet. The sheer speed of the car caused it to bounce off and crash into a concrete fence at the side of the road.

On the occasion of Emancipation Day 2023, the 185th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Guyana, President of the Cooperation Republic of Guyana, Dr. Irfaan Ali, delivered a powerful Emancipation Day message in which he called on former colonial powers to pay reparation to the descendants of African slaves.
Mr. Ronald J. Daniels is a Guyanese born Attorney of Law and poet, among other things. He is generally very vocal on the historical oppression of the African race. European slavery of Africans in Guyana ended in 1838. On the 1st of August each year, the abolition of slavery, a national holiday, is celebrated in the form of Emancipation Day. In this poem, Mr. Daniels expresses his sentiments on slavery and subsequent emancipation.
