What Christmas Means to Guyanese

In some countries, Christmas has a predominantly religious significance. Those are countries which have a predominantly Christian population. In other countries, Christmas has only a cultural significance – a time to make merry and spread goodwill in solidarity with Christians around the world. And in some countries, it is a mix of both religious and cultural significance. Guyana is one such country where Christmas is celebrated by the entire population for either cultural or religious reasons.

No Laughing Matter

I was extremely disappointed to hear our president referring to sugar as a “curse.” The same sugar that put food on the table for so many Guyanese families for centuries. The same sugar which enriched and sweetened the lives of so many people. The same sugar that laid the foundation for so many other industries, and created so many millionaires out of all races, classes, and conditions.

I Support the Parking Meters – Georgetown

I support the Parking Meters Project in the capital city of Guyana, and here’s why. I remember a time when I used to drive through Regent Street, Charlotte Street, Camp Street, Waterloo Street, Middle Street, South Road, Quamina Street, Brickdam Street, Hadfield Street…and the list goes on…for hours trying to find parking space, and when I finally found it, it would be in a compromised position a good distance away form my intended destination.

Essequibo – The Cinderella County

The county of Essequibo encompasses approximately 290,000 people in 700 villages and communities, the majestic Kaieteur Falls – the world’s highest single-drop waterfall – and most of Guyana’s precious mineral resources to boot. This includes the Rupununi Savannahs which span thousands of acres of virtually untouched plains, rain-forested mountains, Amerindian villages and rare wildlife–one of the brightest jewels in Guyana’s tourism crown. The Essequibo is everything west of the mighty Essequibo River towards the border with Venezuela.

Surama Village in the North Rupununi – a Sustainable, Ecotourism Destination

Surama Village is as close as you will come to experiencing human civilization and the rainforest environment all in one. It is home to the Macushi Amerindian Tribe. The Surama Eco Lodge can be found in Surama Village. It was listed as one of the best hotels in Guyana, Venezuela, and Colombia in the year 2011 by National Geographic. In the same year, it was the joint winner of the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Excellence in Sustainable Tourism Award, along with Harrison’s Cave in Barbados.

A Brief Overview of the Country of Guyana

Guyana is a beautiful country located in the continent of South America. It is bordered by Brazil to the south, Suriname to the East, Venezuela to the west, and the Atlantic ocean to the north. It is the only country in South America with English as its official language. However, although English is the official language of Guyana, the Creolese dialect is more widely spoken than English in everyday conversations.
