A unique blend of foods and cultures, the Macushi Restaurant and Lounge opened its door to the public at the Lethem airport square in July, 2024. Owner Carla Camacho explained to this publication that the Macushi Restaurant and Lounge serves an innovative blend of traditional Guyanese cuisine including but not limited to indigenous cuisine.
An indigenous Guyanese of the Macushi Tribe, Carla Camacho spent her early years in the Rupununi Savannahs where she attended school. Being proud of her Macushi heritage, she named her culinary venture “Macushi Restaurant and Lounge” in honor of her Macushi heritage. On this note, Ms. Camacho would like to clear up confusion surrounding the name of her restaurant and the food it serves.

The word “Macushi” was chosen to honor my indigenous heritage. It is a brand that represents me, and does not necessarily reflect the kind of food served at the restaurant. The Macushi restaurant serves a wide variety of Guyanese food which may sometimes include indigenous cuisine, but it is not an indigenous cuisine restaurant, nor does it seek to compete with existing businesses serving indigenous cuisine in Region 9. – Carla Camacho

The Macushi Restaurant and Lounge is conveniently located right opposite the Trans Guyana Office in Lethem, and right next door to the Visit Rupununi Office. Now, you can step over and grab a bite just as you get off the plane or even while you’re waiting on your flight!
The Macushi Restaurant and Lounge is trying to meet the growing demands for restaurant services in Lethem as the town is rapidly transforming into a tourism and commerce hub between Guyana and Brazil while providing a gateway to Guyana’s interior. As such, the Macushi Restaurant and Lounge is always ready to serve its customers: 7 days per week and 12 to 15 hours per day.

Are you fond of singing? Well, grab a mic and rock the night away! The Macushi Restaurant and Lounge hosts a special Karaoke Night every Saturday starting at 6:30 PM. It usually lasts past midnight…or as long as you can! So, come on out and sing your heart away! Or just relax and enjoy the refreshing atmosphere of Karaoke night while listening to some of our talented local singers.
