A young woman was found dead in her apartment at Lusignan, East Coast Demerara, Guyana, South America, this morning. Local police say they are investigating an alleged suicide which is believed to have occurred between 1 AM and 4 AM this morning, 18th of August, 2023. 19-year-old Malinda Fiona Niewenkirk was found slumped down from a bedroom door with a sheet around her neck, one end fastened on top of the door. Her feet were comfortably on the floor.
Although police are currently treating the matter as a suicide, skeptics suspect foul play as they say the conditions are unlikely to make hanging possible. Family and friends of the young woman have related to this publication that they have a hard time believing that Malinda killed herself. They are calling for a thorough investigation into the matter from all angles to determine whether foul play was involved.
At the time of her death, the teen was reportedly in a relationship with a 36-year-old who said he ended the relationship with her a few hours before she allegedly killed herself. The boyfriend told police that he visited Malinda last evening (17th of August, 2023) at around 10 PM to tell her that the relationship was over between them, and that he left at around 1:30 AM this morning, 18th of August, 2023. He claimed that the teen became devastated and started exhibiting suicidal tendency while he tried to talk her out of it. Police were reportedly shown exchanges of WhatsApp messages supporting that story.
The man said that after the young woman stopped responding to his messages, he became worried. After repeated calls and texts went unanswered, the boyfriend went to the Vigilance Police Station and filed a report. A police patrol was dispatched to the teen’s apartment and she was found hanging by a bedsheet from the bedroom door.
EMT from Melanie was summoned and the teen was examined by Doctor Durga who pronounced her dead. The body was also examined for marks of violence and a reddish circular mark was seen around her neck. The body is presently at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Team Guyana, South America extends heartfelt condolences to the relatives and friends of Malinda Fiona Niewenkirk and joins the call for a thorough, impartial investigation into this matter from all angles.
