At Least 19 Killed as US Military Helicopter Collides with American Airlines Passenger Plane

Last updated: January 30, 2025 at 6:46 amA tragic and unfortunate turn of events has left the United States of America, and the world at large, in a state of shock and sadness. On Wednesday night at around 9 PM EST (29th of January, 2025), a US military Black Hawk Helicopter collided in midair with an American Airlines Passenger Plane which was at the time approaching the runway of Reagan National Airport in Washington D.C., USA. Both aircrafts plummeted into the Potomac River upon impact.
American Airlines Passenger Flight 5342 was reportedly carrying 60 passengers and 4 crew members, while the Black Hawk Helicopter was carrying 3 US military service members when the tragic incident occurred. At the time of publishing this story (01:16 hrs EST, 30th of January, 2025), 19 dead bodies were reportedly pulled from the river, with no reports of survivors so far.
American Airlines flight 5342 was inbound to Reagan National at an altitude of about 400 feet and a speed of about 140 miles per hour when it suffered a rapid loss of altitude. The Canadian-made Bombardier CRJ-701 twin-engine jet was manufactured in 2004 and can be configured to carry up to 70 passengers.
