Last updated: April 9, 2025 at 17:54 pmPolice this evening (8th of April, 2025) questioned popular Georgetown businessman, philanthropist, and public figure Azzrudin Mohamed for alleged kidnapping and threats to the life of a professional drone operator. This information was disseminated by local media outlet “Guyana Daily News” via a live Facebook Video this evening at around 8 PM. Present at the Ruimveldt Police Station were Nazar Mohamed, Nazar Mohamed’s son-in-law, and also the owner of Sheriff Security, Ameir Ahmad. Nathan Prince, the young professional drone operator, whom Mohamed has been accused of attempting to kidnap and shoot, was also present at the station.
On Sunday, 5th of April, 2025, a mob of angry protestors impeded a controversial law enforcement operation at the home of the Mohameds. GRA had reportedly served the Mohameds several notices that four luxury vehicles were undeclared and therefore the taxes for them were underpaid. On these grounds, GRA requested that the vehicles be brought in. However, the Mohameds contested the GRA action, moving to court to file an injunction. At the time when GRA arrived to seize the vehicles, the injunction blocking their action had not yet been granted. However, the GRA was blocked from seizing the vehicles by Azzrudin Mohamed backed by a huge crowd of irate supporters who insisted that the GRA officials would not be allowed into the premises.
On the day of the protest action, a drone was seen flying above the property of the Mohameds and pictures taken directly from over the property were shared with local media outlet, Guyana Daily News. At one point, Mohamed was seen looking at the drone and apparently running for cover. After some investigation, the Mohameds identified the person flying the drone. They tracked him down and intercepted him on the road on Sunday, April 6th, 2025. Some aspects of this interception was caught on camera and shared on social media.
The young man alleges that Azzrudin Mohamed and his accomplices pointed a gun at him and told him to come out of the car. In fear, he said, he locked his doors and waited until the police arrived. When the police arrived, the drone operator, Nathan Prince, who is employed by Sheriff Security, came out of the car. He was escorted to the police station where he was questioned and released a few hours later.
Local media publication, Guyana Daily News, subsequently posted that Azzrudin Mohamed should be arrested for attempted kidnapping and attempted murder. Today, 8th of April, 2025, in a live broadcast, Guyana Daily News reported that Azzrudin Mohamed was arrested and being questioned at the Ruimveldt Police Station. A large crowd of supporters arrived at the station shortly after, demanding the release of Mohamed. Azzrudin Mohamed was released about an hour later.
When Azzrudin Mohamed exited the station compound this evening, around 8:51 PM, the Guyana Daily News reporter asked him for a comment. He responded, “your boss, Ameir Ahmad is obsessed with me.” Despite his arrest, the younger Mohamed appeared to be in high spirits.
The landmark arrest of Azzrudin Mohamed marks a serious escalation in a conflict between government forces and embattled city businessmen, Azzrudin and Nazar Mohamed, who were sanctioned by the United States’ Office of Foreign Assets Control in June 2024. The Mohameds claim that they are being victimized and persecuted by government forces because of Azzrudin Mohamed’s perceived threat to the government in power. A significant fraction of the Guyanese population have been calling on Azzrudin Mohamed to contest the upcoming presidential elections.

As we mentioned in our previous article on the subject, if Mohamed does run for political office, he will have great obstacles to overcome due to the recent US sanctions on him and his father. Nevertheless, the government in power seems more afraid of the younger Mohamed than all political groups combined.
