Reports circulating online and perhaps also on printed media that the country of Sweden has officially recognized sex as a sport and will hold sex competitions starting June 8, 2023 are false. The stories were unfortunately replicated online by some very influential media houses, some with a follower base of millions, including World is One (WION) and MSN.com.
The story was also proliferated across social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram and has stirred up quite a frenzy. Many people, becoming alarmed and somewhat outranged, exclaimed that it is “signs of the end times,” and that “Jesus is coming soon..”
Very likely, this story has its origin in some obscure post that was recklessly splattered across the internet without bothering to factcheck.
The story circulating online is that Sweden, a country in Europe, has officially recognized sport as a sex and will be holding its first sex competition starting on June 8, 2023. Participants will be given a 45 minute to 1-hour timeslot to perform in front of a panel of judges as well as an audience. The winners will be determined through a combination of audience votes and judges’ scores. The performances will be judged for endurance, appearances, chemistry, etc. The championship is said to be open to couples from all European countries and people of all sexual orientation can participate.
This publication contacted the Swedish authorities who confirmed that the rumors are false. Sweden has not recognized sex as a sport and will not be hosting any sex championships.
Team Guyana, South America urges all responsible media houses, especially those with millions of followers, to factcheck stories that could cause a frenzy before running with it.
