Last updated: August 17, 2024 at 19:58 pmSeveral folks have commented on the brutal displacement of the some of the residents of Mocha to facilitate the construction of the Heroes Highway. You would recall how homes, livestock and subsistence businesses were bulldozed as residents cried and pleaded.
There are massive structures now being constructed, I understand, just where those residents were displaced from. With the falling of those homes fell dreams and aspirations, sweat and blood, legacies, and inheritances; memories of childhood and the embodiment of the full life of some of those residents.
Several commentators have commented on the structures which now stand in the place of those homes, on land which the government vigorously and, by the demolition, viciously claimed it needed for public infrastructure and reserve. I have seen no response from the government. If the government has responded, might someone kindly tag me in same.
I will make the call here, and invite each of us who is moved by fairness, compassion, and the commitment to a Guyana that belongs to us all- equitably first then equally- to join me in the call for a full and frank disclosure by the government as to who are now the owners and occupiers of those lands. And this as the first of other appropriate requests and demands.
