Last updated: January 5, 2025 at 2:46 amStories of a new viral outbreak in China, similar to the recent Covid-19 virus, is taking social media by storm. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) has not yet declared a state of emergency. Chinese authorities have said earlier today (4th of January, 2025), that the situation is under control and there is no need for alarm. The country is open for tourism. Photos of hospitals overflowing going “viral” on social media are of questionable origin.
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a virus that usually causes symptoms similar to a cold. You might cough or wheeze, have a runny nose or a sore throat. Most cases are mild, but young children, adults over 65 and people with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk for serious illness. HMPV is common — most people get it before they turn 5.
Some sources said, however, that this is a different, more severe strain of the HMPV and that it is spreading fast. These claims remain unverified rumors up to press time (4th of January, 2025 @ 10 PM EST).
As of present, there is no need to be alarmed over the HMPV. However, we will post updates as they become available.
