Last updated: January 1, 2023 at 19:17 pmGuyana’s President Irfaan Ali has started off the New Year with a bang by flying over to neighboring Brazil to attend the inauguration ceremony of his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva who won Brazil’s 2022 elections by a narrow margin.
According to a statement from the Facebook Page of President Ali:
President Irfaan Ali has arrived in Brasilia, the capital of the Federative Republic of Brazil, to attend the Inauguration Ceremonies of President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Vice President-elect Geraldo José Rodrigues Alckmin Filho. The Inauguration is set to take place later today, at the Planalto Palace and Itamaraty Palace respectively. Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Todd, is accompanying President Ali.
Lula da Silva narrowly defeated Jair Bolsonaro in last year’s general elections in Brazil. Although there were nationwide protests, threats of civil war, and claims of electoral fraud by Bolsonaro supporters, a peaceful, democratic transition of power was effected, respecting the will of the majority.
