The International Ecommerce Giant, Shopify, will officially open its first office in Guyana at State House on the Essequibo Coast, Region 2, Guyana, South America on the 28th of May, 2023. Led by ambitious Canadian based Guyanese, Sheriza Mohamed, the company is encouraging Guyanese to rise with the growing trend of online shopping and ecommerce.

Times are changing and we’re moving away from the era of brick and mortar stores – more rapidly in fact, that we would like to imagine. We’re evolving into a world where people go online to shop from the comfort of their own homes, with a few clicks of a mouse and have products delivered straight to them. And this growing, unstoppable trend is what Guyana needs to take advantage of…the faster the better.

Ecommerce online stores will give Guyanese producers and resellers of Guyanese products the power to present their products to the entire world. This in turn will help to boost the country’s economy as shipping overseas will increase the GDP. Imagine having an online store where you proudly display your product, manufactured right here in Guyana, and people from any part of the world can order it with a few simple clicks!

When someone orders your product from your Shopify website, you will receive an email notification with the customer’s information directing where to ship the product. A printable shipping label will be automatically created for you which you easily slap on to the package and ship via your courier of choice…whether it be DHL, FEDEX or even the local Post Office Corporation.

But Shopify websites are not limited to overseas customers. People right at home can order from your website if they have a credit or debit card. While credit and debit cards were once hard to get in Guyana, they are becoming more and more common nowadays, as, aided by its explosive oil and gas industry, Guyana advances to the forefront of technology. Shopify also offers the option for customers to pay cash-on-delivery – although we do admit that this method is a bit risky and can lead to disappointments. Some merchants, nevertheless, may want to give it a try for their Guyanese customers and see how it works.

Special thanks to John Luke of Luke’s Manufacturing for being Shopify Guyana’s first customer in the county of Essequibo! Thanks for coming on board this revolutionary technology that will help to catapult Guyana’s economy to never before dreamed heights.
