The young daughter of a Berbician couple who earn their living through farming has stumbled upon a new passion: painting. And she’s taking it to a whole new level. Before discovering her love for painting, Azeena Tahsir worked with her parents, who are cash crop farmers, at their farm in Black Bush Polder, Region 6. But one day while at the farm, something happened that caused Azeena to “accidentally” awaken a latent talent which she didn’t even know she had.

Azeena explains that she and her family reside in Port Mourant, but her family’s farm is located at Black Bush Polder, about 15 miles away from their home. One day, while at the farm, someone bought a bottle of henna to do a ceremonial design on someone’s hand for a wedding, as is customary in some East Indian cultures. However, the henna turned out to be the wrong color, and the person was about to throw it away. Azeena asked the person not to throw it away, but to give it to her instead. And she started painting on her hands. It was then that Azeena discovered something.

As I started painting on my hands with the henna, I discovered that I have a strong love for painting, and that the images turned out awesome.

When the henna was finished, Azeena managed to get her hands on some crayons and started drawing on paper. In doing this, she continued to delve deeper into her passion for art. About a year later, she traveled to the town of New Amsterdam and bought some acrylic paint which she used to create art on paper which she would hang on the walls of her home. One day, Azeena’s mom took a photo of one of her paintings and posted it on social media. It attracted a lot of attention and confirmed what Azeena had already known: she has a special gift in art.

Sometime in the year 2020, someone encouraged the young woman to invest in some canvas so that her paintings would be more professional and durable. She followed the advice, creating heirloom quality paintings from objects that intrigue her mind. But Azeena explains that selling her painting was initially a challenge, so she would give them away to friends and family.

Sometime in the year 2023, however, a Facebook post made by a popular social media personality, Leon Jameson Suseran, went viral and changed the game. Azeena got her inbox flooded with people eager to buy her inspiring paintings. Azeena says she is also thankful for media coverage previously given to her by Berbician media personality, Melissa Playter Harry.

From a wrong henna to the perfect canvas, a fortunate incident at the farm led this gifted individual to unearth a hidden talent. And now there’s no turning back. Azeena is busy following her passion, putting the finishing touches on one masterpiece after the other with no shortage of hungry buyers ready to swoop them up.
