In a video posted on the Facebook Page of the United States Embassy in Guyana, today, 17th of March 2020, US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, warned that “individuals who seek the benefits of electoral fraud will be subject to a variety of serious consequences from the United States.”
On the 4th of March, 2020, two days after Guyana‘s General and Regional elections, GECOM declared a result with the incumbent APNU/AFC as winner while 458 ballot boxes for Region 4 were still unverified.
The APNU/AFC presidential candidate was scheduled to be sworn in when an injunction was granted by the High Court to block the swearing in. The matter was heard in court and the Chief Justice ordered that the tabulation process for Region 4 must be transparently completed.
After a series of hurdles, it was agreed upon that a CARICOM team would supervise the recounting of Region 4 ballots. However, in a sudden turn of events, an injunction filed by the APNU/AFC blocked the recount which had been rescheduled for 4pm on Tuesday, March 17, 2020.
