
US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, has today, 7th of April, 2020, issued a statement commending Guyana‘s High Court for clearing the way for a national recount of the votes cast in the March 2, 2020 elections. He also said that the United States stands ready to work with international observers to ensure that the recount is done in a free, fair, transparent and credible manner.
The Guyana Elections Commission came under severe criticism by Guyanese and the international community for its nonconformity to the modus operandi of a transparent and credible electoral process. All international observers have stated that the May, 2 election in Guyana has been transparent and credible up to the counting of Region 4 votes.
On the evening of May 4, the Returning Officer of Region 4, Mr. Clairmont Mingo, fell sick and had to hospitalized, bringing a halt to the tabulation process. The next day, GECOM declared the APNU/AFC the winner while only 421 out of 479 ballot boxes for Region 4 were tabulated.
A private citizen subsequently filed an injunction to block the swearing of the APNU/AFC candidate, David Granger. The matter has been before the court up to April 5th when the High Court ruled once again in favor of a recount.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Trinidad has said that he is deeply worried about the political situation in Guyana, and expressed that he is amazed that CARICOM had to become a defendant in Guyana‘s High Court when their only intention was to help the people of Guyana.
