The CARICOM observer team which has been arranged to oversee a transparent and credible national recount of all votes cast in the March 2020 elections has today, 1st of May, 2020, landed in Guyana in preparation for the much anticipated votes recount.

The three-member CARICOM Team which landed in Guyana today includes:

Ms. Cynthia Barrow-Giles

Ms. Cynthia Barrow-Giles, the leader of the CARICOM scrutineers to Guyana, is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Government at the University of the West Indies (UWI).

Mr. John Jarvis

John Jarvis (Center)
Mr. John Jarvis is Commissioner of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission.

Mr. Sylvester King

Mr. Sylvester King (Right)
Mr. Sylvester King is the Deputy Supervisor of Elections of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The chartered flight which landed at Eugene Correia International Airport at Ogle, East Bank Demerara today, 1st of May, 2020 has been sponsored by the Canadian government. It is understood that the Canadian government will also pay for the cost of the estimated 25 days stay of the CARICOM team in Guyana.

In a statement today, the CARICOM Chair, who is the Barbados Prime Minister, Ms. Mia Amor Motley, expressed thanks to the Canadian government for its support of the CARICOM Team deployed to Guyana to help support a democratic transition of government in Guyana, South America.

Meanwhile, the Guyana Elections Commission has not yet named a date for the start of the recount process – raising fears of a further attempt to frustrate the recount process. In a recent interview with local media, US Ambassador to Guyana, Sarah Ann Lynch, has said that the length of time taken up by the electoral process with no winner declared in Guyana has been “historic.”

The US Ambassador has recently come under criticism from the incumbent APNU/AFC administration which called on foreign powers to desist from “interfering” in Guyana’s electoral processes. This criticism came after several international observers walked out in protest of the Region 4 tabulation process on March 13, labeling it non-credible and corrupt.

Various international powers have warned Guyana of the dangers of partaking electoral fraud and the possible sanctions which it may attract.
