The United States has today, 3rd of May 2020, accentuated its commitment to democracy in Guyana by calling on the Guyana Government to allow the Carter Center into Guyana to observe the proposed national recount.
This comes after the Carter Center reported that it wants to send an observer to Guyana for the proposed national recount but is not getting approval from the Guyana government.
Through a tweet from the Acting Assistant Secretary for U.S Department of State’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, Michael Kozak, the United States said:
The United States calls on the Government of #Guyana to approve entry for @CarterCenter and @IRIGlobal in order to ensure a transparent electoral recount. A credible recount requires robust international participation.
The Organization of American states has also urged the Guyana Government to allow the team from the Carter Center in.
Many stakeholders as well as leaders of political parties in Guyana are worried that barring entry to crucial international observers signals an attempt to corrupt the recount process.
