The national recount of votes cast in the March 2, 2020 elections in Guyana continues today @day11 at the Arthur Chung Convention Center in Georgetown, Guyana, South America. At the end of today, 16th of May, 2020 a total of 49 more ballot boxes had been completed.
Needless to say, the drama continues between the APNU/AFC and the rest of the world. In most recent developments, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Basil Williams, came on air to say that the recount cannot be used to declare a winner of the elections, claiming that he knows of no law which permits the recount to be used to declare a winner. This contradicts what Commissioner Vincent Alexander had said: that the recount would automatically be used to declare the winner.
However, Mr. Williams argued that the previous March 4 declaration which was protested by all opposition parties, as well as local and international observers, still stands. This shocker comes in stark contrast to what even Mr. David Granger had said only hours before the recount had started: that the APNU/AFC would respect the results of the recount as final.
However, in a surprising twist of events, Mr. Basil Williams argued that the recount is only being done to expose anomalies and evidence of rigging by the opposition PPP/C such as dead and migrated persons having voted. Asked how the APNU/AFC government is and was prepared to declare itself winner of a rigged electoral process, he responded that most of the “dead people” voted in opposition strongholds – so to speak.
All local and international observers and party agents as well as David Granger and Basil Williams had earlier said that the March 2 electoral process was free and transparent. However, the uproar began some time into the tabulation of Region 4 results when Mr. Mingo was accused of inputting fictitious figures into a spreadsheet – an allegation which was subsequently proven to be true during the recount.
