At the end of today, 20th of May, 2020, a total of 71 more ballot boxes have been completed in the recount of all votes cast in the March 2, 2020 elections in Guyana, South America. This brings the total number of completed ballot boxes up to 789 out of a total of 2339 ballot boxes which need to be counted.

There are ongoing talks between GECOM and stakeholders to extend the recount period to an additional 7 days. The initial plan was 25 days of which 15 have been exhausted and less than half the total of ballot boxes completed, raising concerns that the timeline would not be sufficient.

It was reported today that the APNU/AFC representative refused to sign the certificate of tabulation for district 2 allegedly because he disagreed with the statement of “valid votes.” However, all other party representatives signed. Further PPP/C appointed GECOM commissioner, Mr. Sase Gunraj, has stated that the failure or refusal of a party agent to sign the certificate does not render it invalid.

Meanwhile, Presidential Candidate of the LJP, Lenox Shuman, has written to GECOM to make formal request for additional counting stations to speed up the ongoing recount which is taking place at the Arthur Chung Convention Center in Georgetown, Guyana, South America.
