Commentary: A PPP/C Declaration is Inevitable

Many Guyanese are nervous as to the declaration that will be made today. Today, June 16, 2020 is a defining moment in Guyana’s history. The declaration made by GECOM will determine whether Guyana rises in glory or catapults into chaos. Consequently, many patriotic Guyanese are nervous that Madam Chair Claudette Singh might bend to the pressure of the APNU/AFC and declare the elections null and void.

But, as Lenox Shuman had put it in early March, “you cannot hold back the hands of inevitability…the PPP/C has won these elections.” While the GECOM chair may have been acting “weird” over the last few months due to intense pressure from the David Granger administration, she is not stupid. Ms. Claudette Singh will not risk international sanctions and a dirty name by throwing Guyana down the path to poverty, destruction and ruin.

But what happens if she does? Exactly that. Guyana is ruined and is on the path to destruction and poverty. And no, the petty, overhyped oil money won’t save Guyana. If the David Granger administration gets its way today, Guyana immediately becomes a rogue state. It risks exclusion from the OAS and therefore has no defense from the Venezuelan threat. It also risks exclusion from CARICOM and the Commonwealth – just to name a few.

Guyana will then face a steadily inflating currency in the midst of hardship in procuring resources to develop. The “oil money” will be virtually worthless.

While thousands of APNU/AFC hardliners are chanting that the APNU/AFC must remain in power, they are really dancing to the tune of their own destruction which will befall all Guyanese if a dictatorship continues to prevail in Guyana.

With this mind, it is clear that a PPP/C declaration by GECOM is inevitable, and I’m sure Ms. Claudette Singh understands this.
