Essequibo Border Controversy: ICJ Hearing Set for June 30, 2020

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has served notice that the public hearing of the question of the Court’s jurisdiction in the case concerning the Arbitral Award of 3 October, 1899 (Guyana V. Venezuela) will open on Tuesday, 30th June, 2020 at 2 PM at the Peace Palace in the Hague, the seat of the court.

Venezuela has informed the court that it will not attend on the basis that the Paris Award of 1899 is null and void and further they content that Venezuela has never signed the Paris Award of 1899.

The delegation of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana will present its oral arguments from 2 p.m. at 5 p.m.

In view of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the audience will take place in the Great Hall of Justice by video conference. Some members of the court will be physically present, others will be remotely involved, and Guyana representatives will address the Court by video link.

Members of the media and the public will be able to follow oral procedures live webcast.
