Guyana’s biggest, most powerful and most influential neighbor, Brazil, is celebrating an important event today, 10th of July, 2020: the 130th Anniversary of the town of Boa Vista in the state of Roraima, Brazil.
The state of Roraima is the northernmost state of Brazil. It forms the southern border of Guyana. The town of Boa Vista is the capital of Roraima. It is located about 150 KM from the Guyanese town of Lethem.
Most groceries and consumer items which are consumed in Region 9, Guyana is imported from neighboring Boa Vista, Brazil. That is because it is often easier to source from Boa Vista instead of Georgetown which is over 300 miles away from Lethem. Further, since Brazil manufactures everything from a pin to an anchor, it is often cheaper to source goods from Boa Vista rather than Georgetown. In fact, truckloads of goods such as groceries and household products leave Brazil and enter Lethem en route to Georgetown every month.
Many residents of Region 9, Guyana have dual residency with both Guyana and Brazil, and Guyanese in Region 9 make frequent trips to Brazil, especially to city of Boa Vista. One of the major tourists attractions of Boa Vista is the famous water park which residents of Region 9 often visit, but there are many other beautiful spots and tourists attractions in the city of Boa Vista, Brazil.
One thing you might not like about Boa Vista is the extremely hot weather. Since the city is located close to the earth’s equator, the temperature often rises as high as 34 degrees Celsius. Nevertheless, as with anywhere else in the world, the residents of Boa Vista seem to have acclimatized well and the heat doesn’t seem to bother them. Further, there are many cloudy days where the atmosphere takes on the perfect chill. Residents of Boa Vista say that it is one of Brazil’s best cities, and that they love Boa Vista, or as they say in Portuguese, “Eu Amo Boa Vista.”
About 300 miles from Boa Vista is the city of Manaus – the capital of the state of Amazonas. Lying directly on the earth’s equator, the city of Manaus is the hottest city in Brazil and one of the hottest places on earth.
When you travel to Lethem in Region 9 of Guyana, cross the Takutu River Bridge and go to border town of Bonfim. Then take a 2-hours drive to the beautiful city of Boa Vista, Brazil.
