Georgetown, Guyana, South America.

In light of growing concerns by the local and international communities that the APNU/AFC caretaker government might attempt to create a dictatorship by abusing the military, a number of foreign diplomats held a meeting today, June 10, 2020, with the Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defense Force, Brigadier Godfrey Bess.

During the meeting, Mr. Bess reassured the diplomats, which included the US Ambassador, the British High Commissioner, the Canadian High Commissioner and the EU Ambassador that the GDF is “apolitical” in nature and will abide by the constitution of Guyana, South America.

Apolitical means not affiliated with any political party and therefore not loyal to the APNU/AFC which has lost the March 2, 2020 elections by over 15,000 votes.

In exchange, the diplomats reassured the GDF of military support from their respective countries.

This move spells a “game over” for rogue elements within the APNU/AFC camp whose last hope might be that the APNU/AFC will cling to power after having lost the elections through military intimidation tactics.

The following statement was posted today, 10th of July, 2020 at around 7 PM.

Chief-of-Staff, Brigadier Godfrey Bess, reiterated the apolitical nature and posture of the Guyana Defence Force, when he met with senior diplomats of the USA, the UK, Canada and the EU, this afternoon, at the Conference Room, Defense Headquarters, Base Camp Ayanganna.

Brigadier Bess also emphasized to United States Ambassador, Ms. Sarah Ann Lynch, British High Commissioner, Mr. Greg Quinn, Canadian High Commissioner Ms. Lilian Chattergee and European Ambassador Mr. Fernando Ponz-Canto, that the GDF is fulfilling its mandate and will continue to abide by its role as stipulated by Guyana’s Constitution.

For their part, Their Excellencies pledged continued military support for the GDF.

Senior officers present during the courtesy call included, Inspector General, Colonel Trevor Bowman, Quartermaster General, Colonel Sherwin Anderson, Adjutant General Colonel Raul Jerrick and Staff Officer One Special Duties Lieutenant Colonel Colin Henry.
