Despite strong precautionary measures taken by the REO, Mr. Carl Parker, the COVID Task Force, the COVID Medical Team and other relevant authorities of Region 9, the coronavirus has seeped past the border with Brazil into Region 9 and is now climbing to dizzying heights.

The REO had suggested last week that Toshaos may be shielding villagers who cross from Brazil into indigenous villages while others speculate that the mining activities in Marudi which result in constant traffic may have contributed to the rapid spread of coronavirus in Region 9.

Some residents, speaking to this publication, have related that there may be a much higher incidence of COVID-19 in the Rupununi since many people are scared of isolation. This fear of isolation and being away from their family, especially children, is causing many people with symptoms to avert testing. This leads to a dangerous trend.

The following post was made by a resident of Annai in the North Rupununi Savannahs of Guyana.

My sister was working at a restaurant where her coworkers got tested positive with COVID-19. Today her results come back positive for Covid. Medical team working in North, you should test everybody in North who has symptoms of flu, soar throat and fever.

According to information I get from there, most people from Annai district and Aranaputa are having the symptoms of COVID-19. But what the health people are doing is just taking 1 or 2 samples and sending it for testing. While you are doing that, more people are contracting it. Now is the time to go house to house including back dams to test people who are sick.

People are not coming out to say they are having symptoms because they are scared of being isolated away from their kids. In the case of my sister, they took a sample from her and it came back positive and they are carrying her away. What about her children? Are you going to test them and send everybody in the family?

She just has mild symptoms and I’m sure her kids also have it…why can’t you just isolate people with mild symptoms at home? That way at least other relatives can leave food for them outside for them to pick up. What special treatment do you have in Lethem that you cannot bring to Annai? Other options would be to make quarantine place in North, one in South etc…. I understand there are limited trained Medical personnel but CHWs can manage the treatment in the village. This virus is spreading and people have to act quickly. 😔 sad….
