3rd of August, 2020. Region 9, Guyana, South America.
My name is Dr. Narash Torres. I’m a general practitioner attached to the Lethem Regional Hospital under the Ministry Of Public Health. I was part of the Hospital’s COVID-19 Task Force since the pandemic…which I volunteered for obviously. I did several outreaches in the Northern and Southern subdistricts of Region 9…which included implementation of precautionary measures, screening and swabbing.
We worked under conditions no one will understand but us. I want to say special thanks to the Regional Executive Officer, Regional Chairman & the rest of the Regional Task Force for always providing us with whatever was available.
Despite all precautions taken I must sadly say I tested positive for COVID-19 as of yesterday. It was only a matter of time. The deadly virus respects no one. I am having mild symptoms. I’m presently in isolation and receiving treatment from our valuable staff.
Now my is biggest worry is the well-being of my colleagues on the front line. Better must be done for us. I had a colleague more than 2 months in isolation in Kumaka District Hospital and no one ever made mention of her. Many may ask why go to social media? Social media is the biggest platform to voice our concerns especially among young people. We all have a smart phone and Internet. We usually don’t watch news nor listen to radio. I want adolescents & young adults to realize that this pandemic is indeed unprecedented.
So again I beg you all to take the necessary precautions…social distancing…wear face coverings…sanitise and wash hands frequently. COVID-19 is everyone’s business. We need all hands on deck. Keep strong and stay safe.
