He warns that the situation is becoming “critical” in Region 9, Guyana, South America.

Statement by RHO, Dr. Uthman – 16th of August

Region 9 COVID 19 UPDATE as at August 16, 2020

Good Sunday All.

Let me start off this update by pleading with the entire Region 9 to be more responsible, to take COVID-19 a lot more serious.

Residents! The regional situation is becoming critical. It is becoming increasingly difficult to manage and monitor the increasing number of cases and contacts.

– Total cases 144
-Active cases 95
-Recoveries 48
-1 death
-643 test done

**New Cases = 11*

*Portarinau (pregnant) – 1*

*Lethem – 6*

**St Ignatius – 4*

The greatest challenge presently is adherence to COVID measures by the general public.

A worrying sign is that in some of the villages visited persons are refusing to be tested and persons are adamant if not following the COVID measures.

Lethem and the surrounding areas are becoming more affected and many persons are still not adhering to the measures.

I plead with everyone, we are in the phase of community spread in Region 9.

Everyone is a possible case until proven otherwise. We cannot be complacent in our interactions with anyone.

Social and physical distancing, hand washing and sanitizing, using our face mask and limiting unnecessary movements especially to other villages and worse yet to Brazil.

We now have 6 additional doctors in the region and we are expecting some nurses in the coming week. 2 of these doctors are going to the north today and will manage the district.

All other COVID activities will continue as per normal.

*PLEASE ADHERE TO THE MEASURES*
?

Dr. Naail Uthman
Regional Health Officer
