Last updated: August 21, 2020 at 17:13 pmThe Government of Guyana, through its Department of Public Information, has today, 21st of August, 2020, stated that a legislation is being drafted to ensure that the Guyanese public is made aware of every cent collected from the oil revenues.
According to the Vice President, this is in the interest of preventing misuse, theft and misappropriation of Guyana’s incoming oil wealth.
“We made it clear that the Minister of Finance or the Secretary to the Treasury would have to gazette every cent collected from the oil companies, big or small… so that the country can read the official gazette and know how much we collected and in which month.”
Dr. Jagdeo emphasized that corruption is enhanced when the people of the country are unaware of what is going on behind the scenes – in this case, how much money comes in from revenue. He says that a system is being put into place to criminalize attempts at non-disclosure of public funds – specifically Guyana’s oil funds.
