Last updated: August 26, 2020 at 10:04 amThe Education Minister, Ms. Priya Manickchand, has yesterday, 25th of August, 2020, dispelled rumors that there was a plan in place to cut the salaries of teachers and school sweepers/cleaners on account of COVID-19 lock down.
Statement from Minister of Education
My friends, particularly teachers and sweeper/cleaners across Guyana, there are two voice notes going around saying some kind of nonsense to the effect that I plan on cutting the salaries of teachers and/or sweeper cleaners across Guyana.
Please know this is absolutely untrue. We value our teachers and cherish the sweeper cleaners who keep our teachers and children in clean environments.
The voice note repeats the Volda Lawrence “Woo hoo” type comment and mirrors the mischief of voice notes crafted by the APNU/AFC that were distributed during the elections. So most likely it is that kind of political mischief that is intended. I invite you to ignore and rubbish it.
The PPP/C Government remains committed to delivering education equitably in safe spaces and to ensuring our teachers are adequately compensated.
