Last updated: September 6, 2020 at 15:19 pmOn Saturday, 5th of September, 2020, Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Hon. Pauline Sukhai, visited Fairview Village in Region 9, Guyana, South America and distributed 40 food hampers and other items to vulnerable families within the community.
At a simple handing over ceremony at the Fairview Primary School, Minister Sukhai explained that the initiative is part of the Government’s effort to bring relief to citizens who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This, she said, will complement the stimulus grant announced by His Excellency, Dr. Mohammed Irfaan Ali.
Minister Sukhai also used the opportunity to update the villagers on some of the projects included in Budget 2020 for Amerindians. These include; increases for Presidential Grants, the reintroduction of the Community Support Officers (CSO) Programme that will see an initial 20 villages benefiting, as well as the ICT hub programme and the household solar panel programme.The Amerindian Development Fund (ADF) programme will also return in 2021 and will be fully financed by the Government.
Minister Sukhai also assured that more scholarships will also be made available to Amerindian youths who would like to further their education at higher institutes of learning such as the University of Guyana (UG).
