First Lady of Guyana, Arya Ali, has today, 8th of November, 2020, posted a congratulatory message to the New US Vice President – Kamala Harris while highlighting that her ascension into such a high office is a beacon of hope for women and girls across the Caribbean.
Kamala Harris is the first woman of “color” to be elected to the White House in the role of Vice President. As such, her achievement has broken a great barrier that stood between colored people of the United States and positions of power. It has also signaled the possibility of more such breakthroughs in the near future and is an inspiration to all those who dream of “doing the impossible.”
Kamala Harris is the daughter of immigrants who moved to the United States in search of a better life. And seeing their daughter in such a prominent role in the White House – they have certainly found it! Kamala’s mother is of East Indian descent from the country of India and her father is of African descent from the country of Jamaica. Kamala is what Guyanese would refer to the “dougla” ethnicity.
Message from Mrs. Arya Ali
I extend my warmest congratulations to President-elect and Vice President-elect of the United States, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
VP Harris represents a generation of women who are not just offering hope and inspiration to girls and women around the world, but are breaking barriers and shattering glass ceilings.
While we celebrate this milestone for women in the United States, let us also acknowledge the significance of VP Harris’ achievement to the Caribbean. We take real pride in a daughter of this great region.
God’s blessings for a successful tenure Mr. President and Madame Vice President.
