Residents of the Rupununi are in a state of high alert following yesterday’s 5.7 magnitude earthquake which shook homes hundreds of miles away from the epicenter. According to information received from the South Rupununi District Council, strange noises can be heard coming from the Rupununi River every ten to fifteen minutes – noises that approximate the sound of explosions and gunfire.

Last night, a team from the SRDC and the Aishalton police station went to visit the badly affected homes and areas. It was reported that the sounds like gunfire or explosions of bombs were still being heard happening specifically in and around the Rupununi river every 10-15 mins. As of this morning, still there are calls being received from scared and concerned villagers around there confirming this. Here are some pictures of the affected homes and the damage caused by it.
