As such, the family is crying out to the relevant authorities to address these serious concerns and to the general public to make their voices heard in matters of this nature. The idea is that the citizens of Guyana deserve better treatment and care when being attended to at public hospitals across the country.
Vanessa Lewis and her newborn baby died hours last Saturday morning, 27th of February, 2021. She was 31 years old at the time of her death. The young mother of three was a resident of Williamsburg Village, Corentyne, Berbice, Guyana, South America.
Reports are that, after giving birth to her fourth child at the New Amsterdam Hospital in Region 6, Vanessa was transported in an unconscious state to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where she died several hours later. The nurses at the New Amsterdam Hospital related to the family that the baby had died in Vanessa’s womb and a surgery had been performed to remove the baby.

With profound grief and sadness it’s hard to say that my niece, Vanessa Lewis, has passed away due to medical malpractice in Guyana. These disturbing failures must be stopped. Guyanese should stand up for justice and demand that those in charge of the medical institutions should adjudicate these medical dilemma.

An investigation into the death of Vanessa Lewis-Sahadeo has been launched and the Health Ministry has reassured the family that the exact circumstances leading up to her death will be revealed.
