Last updated: August 9, 2021 at 18:29 pmIn a disheartening Facebook Post published today, 9th of August, 2021, Vice President of Guyana, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, accused people who are advocating against mandating vaccines of being politically motivated.
It is absolutely abhorrent that while every effort is being made to save lives, politically aligned elements are instigating protests.

While it is possible that some political elements may be capitalizing on the vaccine to gain political grounds, the vast majority of voices against mandatory vaccines have very little to do with politics. People of all political affiliations and religious beliefs will be divided into pro-vaxxers, anti-vaxxers and those who are neutral.
The Vice President also suggested that those who are now standing up for freedom of choice and fundamental human and civil rights were silent during the APNU/AFC abuses. But many of same people who spoke out against the abuses of the coalition government are now speaking out against mandatory vaccines.
The naysayers protesting the push for increased vaccination against COVID – ironically clad in mask and face shields – remained silent in the face of Granger’s draconian order.

Team Guyana, South America will always stand up for the truth, for human rights, and for marginalized groups, and we will not be silenced. Restricting citizens’ freedom of movement because they refuse to take the vaccine is unethical at best and dictatorship at worst.
We all dream of a world where Covid no longer exists. But we must devise better means to that end. Citizens must be free to choose whether they would like to be vaccinated or not. The best the government can do is convince the masses that the vaccine is safe and effective. It is understandable that the government may be under pressure from certain international forces to mandate vaccines, but we must remain a free and democratic nation, and people must be free to choose what they allow into their bodies and what they don’t.
What the government needs to understand is that the very people whose civil rights are being trampled on now are the ones whose votes it will need in 2025.
