Last updated: September 4, 2021 at 11:14 amPresident Ali made a trip to Region 9, Guyana, South America today, 4th of September, 2021. It wasn’t exactly a red-carpet welcome as he stepped off the plane, but further down, as the presidential team approached the round-about near to the Lethem Power Company, they were greeted by an angry group of peaceful protestors holding up placards and chanting, “My Body, My Choice!”
The protestors braved the rain to give the president a not-so-warm welcome to Lethem. A great fraction of Region 9 residents are angry at the coercive vaccine policies implemented by the Guyana government. Many people are skeptical about taking the Covid-19 vaccine, but they are told that if they do not, they cannot enter government buildings or access essential services even such as from government hospital.
Yesterday, a resident of Yupukari who had braved the tiring, hours-long journey to Lethem was allegedly denied entry into the Lethem Regional Hospital because he didn’t have a vaccine card to present at the gate.
Teachers are being told that they will be required to either get vaccinated or present a valid PCR test showing a negative Covid status every week. Teachers who refuse to comply will be denied entry into schools and marked absent. Yesterday, 3rd of September, 2021, numerous residents staged protests in front of the office of the Regional Democratic Council in Lethem and the Department of Education building.
Region 9 is generally perceived as a PPP/C stronghold since the PPP/C government had won the Region during the March 2020 elections.
