Reports are coming out of Bonfim, Roraima, the border town of Lethem, of an incident which took place this morning between the protestors blocking trucks of merchandise from entering Guyana and the Secretary of Health and former Mayor of Bonfim, Lesete Spies.

According to reports, the Secretary of Health visited the protest site this morning and condemned the protest. Some say she went as far as calling the protestors “vagabonds.” The Secretary of Health has said that the protestors are breaching Covid-19 protocols, endangering pubic health, and unlawfully blocking a road. The protestors retaliated by saying that Spies is being hypocritical since she is the owner of a resort in Bonfim where many people – both Brazilians and Guyanese – gather every weekend breaching all Covid-19 protocols.

Further, the Bonfim Secretary of Health alleges that the protestors damaged her car when she passed by this morning and she has contacted a lawyer about suing for damages. The protestors responded that no one damaged her car, but that she “threw” her car on the protestors.

The protestors commented that this will not break their spirit but will only strengthen their resolve to either seal off the border completely or secure a better deal which allows concession for Brazilians to enter Guyana under certain conditions.
