A new variant of the Covid-19 virus, named Omicron, is spreading rapidly across South African countries. The new variant appears to be more easily transmissible, is more deadly, and has a protein structure that is likely to render the existing vaccines ineffective against it.

If the Omicron strain of the Covid-19 virus gets out of control, it could wipe out a good part of the human population in a very short period of time. While viral strains are not uncommon, scientists describe this particular strain as “worrying.” The existing vaccines most likely have no potency against the Omicron strain.

A few cases of Omicron has already spread to Belgium, Hong Kong, and Israel, and all other countries are on high alert. Health authorities in those countries have gone to great lengths to try to contain it and keep those cases isolated. The United States, Europe, Brazil, and a few other countries, have already taken the precautionary measure of banning flights from African countries where the Omicron strain of the Covid-19 variant has been detected.

Team Guyana, South America calls on the Guyana Government to follow suit and ban all flights from countries where the Omicron variant has been detected.
