In a move that has the blessing of Queen Elizabeth 11, the Royal Standard Flag will be lowered at midnight tonight, Monday, 29th of November, 2021, and the governor general, Sandra Mason, will be inaugurated as the first president of what will now be the world’s newest republic.
Prince Charles himself is presently in Barbados – having been invited to be the guest of honor at the Pride of Nationhood Ceremony which will include dances, fireworks, a mounted guard of honor, gun salutes, and military parades. Prince Charles will be awarded Barbados’ highest national honor, The Order of Freedom of Barbados.
Although Barbados is an Atlantic Island, it identifies as part of the Caribbean due to cultural and historical similarities. Like most Caribbean island countries, Barbados was once colonized by the British Empire which at one point ruled a great fraction of the world. African slaves toiled on plantations until the abolition of slavery from the British empire circa 1834-1838.
Barbados and the country of Guyana, South America, two essentially different countries, have a few things in common. They were both colonized by the British Empire and they both gained independence in 1966. However, for the past 55 years, Barbados, unlike Guyana, remained under the protection of the British flag. All of this will change tonight, 29th of November, 2021, as the country replaces the Queen with its own president.
