Brazil has confirmed two cases of the recently discovered Omicron variant of the Covid-19 virus which scientists say may be resistant to the available vaccines. The cases are a man and a woman who recently landed in Sao Paulo from South Africa. The tests were done at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo.

The couple, a 41-year-old male and a 37-year-old female, flew into the country on the 23rd of November, before the WHO alerted about the Omicron variant and before Brazil restricted incoming flights from South Africa.

So far, the couple has exhibited only light symptoms. They are currently in isolation and are being monitored by the health authorities. Brazil is investigating about 6 more possible cases of the Omicron variant in the country.

Unfortunately, if the Omicron variant spreads rapidly across Brazil, it may force neighboring Guyana to close its border with Brazil at Region 9 for a second time – a distasteful prospect for residents of both countries who rely heavily on each other for their livelihoods.

Efforts are underway to create a vaccine to tackle the Omicron variant.
