Last updated: February 11, 2022 at 21:09 pmReports reaching this publication are that a group of CANU officers stationed in Lethem has used the government outfit to confiscate a quantity of alcohol beverages which they then allegedly converted into their personal use.
According to Mr. Royston Hamilton of Annai Village, North Rupununi, on the 8th of February, 2022, at around 5 PM, he had purchased a quantity of alcoholic beverages valued at about $300,000 and was en route to his home in Annai when he was intercepted on Lethem’s main commercial roadway by the CANU officers. The alcoholic beverages included Brazilian beers and the restricted “Blackstone” rum.
The CANU officers then reportedly seized all the alcoholic beverages but negotiated with him to return with a sum of cash for settlement in order to have his goods returned. However, Mr. Hamilton relates that he was unable to come up with the required sum of money and thus went to visit the GRA office in Lethem to negotiate the possibility of paying the required taxes and having his products returned.
Upon investigations, Mr. Hamilton was told by the GRA officials that they are not aware of any such seizure and do not have such items in their possession. This led Mr. Hamilton to believe that the CANU officers acted underhandedly in depriving him of his goods for personal gain.
