Five days after winning his first Oscar, Hollywood actor, Will Smith, has resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. His resignation comes in the midst of worldwide condemnation of his action of slapping comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars Awards Ceremony at Dolby Theatre, Hollywood California, USA on the evening of March, 27th, 2022.

During the awards Ceremony last week, the 53-year-old superstar marched on stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock who was at the time doing an onstage presentation. The lead up to the incident is that Chris Rock cracked a joke about Jada Smith’s bald head. He said he would like to see her starring in GI Jane II. But Jada didn’t seem to take the joke in good spirits. This apparently prompted Will Smith to react, but obviously he overreacted.

It is not clear if Chris Rock knew that Jada Smith had struggled with a medical condition that caused hair loss – for which reason she opted to shave off all her hair and carry a hairless hairstyle that still accentuated her beauty.

In essence though, the joke was most likely meant as a compliment to Jada Smith as she was being compared to Hollywood sensation Demi Moore who starred with a bald head in the action-drama movie “GI Jane.” However, Jada seem to have picked up the wrong end of the stick.

Statement by Will Smith

“My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home.

“I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken. I want to put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements and allow the Academy to get back to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film.

“So, I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and will accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate. Change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason.”
