At the end of the month of Ramadan each year, Muslims in Guyana, and around the world, celebrate Eid-al-Fitr. The exact date of Eid-al-Fitr varies each year in accordance with the Islamic Calendar which is based on the sighting of the moon. In 2022, it started on May 2nd and will culminate on the evening of May 3rd.

For Muslims, Eid-al-Fitr marks the end of one month of dawn-to-dusk fasting, but it also has a deeper significance. Eid-al-Fitr is also a celebration of the anniversary of the start of the revelation of the Islamic Holy Book – the Koran. It is believed that the first Koranic revelations were given to prophet Mohamed during the month of Ramadan. For this reason, Muslims fast, pray, and practice restraint during the month of Ramadan.

Eid-al-Fitr, the end of the Ramadan, is celebrated with a massive get-together and feasting. It is also a time for Muslim families to get together and pray. During Eid-al-Fitr, Muslims also visit Mosques and pray under an open sky.
