On the 8th of May, 2022, this publication published an article highlighting the destruction of property belonging to squatters in Region 10 as part of a construction project whereby the destroyed properties stood in the way of a proposed road for a new housing scheme at Amelia’s Ward, Region 10.
Minister of Housing, Collin Croal, in a press release this morning, 10th of May, 2022, said that Region 10 squatters whose houses were demolished on Saturday, 7th of May, 2022, will be relocated and compensated. Mr. Croal accused opposition political figures of exaggerating the extent of the damage done to structures belonging to squatters. He explained that only two buildings were demolished along with several fences and foundations. Several political figures, including opposition MP, Jermaine Figuiera, had posted that “some twenty homes” were destroyed during the Ministry’s construction exercise on Saturday.
In my information, there were two buildings that were destroyed, just two. We don’t take pleasure in demolishing any structure.Collin Croal – Minister of Housing
On Monday, 9th of May, 2022, the CEO of the Central Housing and Planning Authority of Region 10, Sherwyn Greaves, met with squatters whose structures were demolished and informed them that they would be relocated and compensated.
