Minister of Housing, Collin Croal, in a press release this morning, 10th of May, 2022, said that Region 10 squatters whose houses were demolished on Saturday, 7th of May, 2022, will be relocated and compensated. Mr. Croal accused opposition political figures of exaggerating the extent of the damage done to structures belonging to squatters. He explained that only two buildings were demolished along with several fences and foundations. Several political figures, including opposition MP, Jermaine Figuiera, had posted that “some twenty homes” were destroyed during the Ministry’s construction exercise on Saturday.
In my information, there were two buildings that were destroyed, just two. We don’t take pleasure in demolishing any structure.

On Monday, 9th of May, 2022, the CEO of the Central Housing and Planning Authority of Region 10, Sherwyn Greaves, met with squatters whose structures were demolished and informed them that they would be relocated and compensated. After the meeting, Presenter Courdel Jones interviewed several affected squatters who expressed great satisfaction at the options and compensation given to them by the Ministry of Housing.
Minister Croal further accused opposition political figures of trying to stymie progress by encouraging persons to squat in the area mapped out for construction exercises, and explained that the Ministry of Housing had issued repeated notices and warnings for persons to desist from constructing in those particular spaces.
