Flood Waters Ravage Region 9 Killing Animals, Displacing People, and Destroying Property

The Regional Authorities in Region 9, Guyana, South America have sounded an alarm and a cry for help as rising flood waters continue to sweep across Lethem and outlying areas today, Monday, 23rd of May, 2022.

The office of the Regional Democratic Council in Region 9 posted today:

Volunteers needed to assist with the impact of flooding that is presently happening in the region.

  • Volunteers to fill sand bags.
  • Vehicles to transport persons to shelters
  • Donations for food hampers for affected families
  • Donations for drinking water

The Civil Defense Commission reported today:

Due to the consistent rainfall in the area water levels continue to rise from deep South to the South Pakaraimas. Several communities and farms are inundated resulting in the relocation of families.

Residents have reported that the flood waters have inundated their homes, destroyed livestock, and damaged or destroyed their properties including electronic items. The Regional Democratic Council of Region 9 have estimated that at least 100 persons have been displaced by the flooding. Further, the flood waters pose serious risk of dangerous reptiles coming in close contact with persons and houses, and also the risk of disease spread through dirty water.

A team from the National Data Management Authority which was engaged in restoration and maintenance works has turned their attention and redirected their efforts to the flood relief efforts.

The Regional Disaster Response Committee and a Representative from the Civil Defense Commission is presently having an emergency meeting at the RDC boardroom to discuss the impact of flooding in the region.

This morning, residents were forced to use boats to move from one locality to the other in and around Lethem.
