Basically, funnel clouds are divided into two categories.
1. A landspout is a funnel cloud which occurs above dry ground.
2. A waterspout is a funnel cloud which occurs over a body of water such as a sea, river, or ocean.
Funnel clouds are powerfully rotating columns of air which descends from a cloud typically during thunderstorms. Funnel clouds which reach the ground often transform into tornadoes.
