David Patterson and Khemraj Ramjattan, two AFC members, have both expressed strong interest in contesting for the leadership position of the Alliance for Change Political Party. The two were the only nominees and will be officially contesting to become the next leader of the AFC.

Former AFC leader, Raphael Trotman, has said that he is not interested in contesting for the leadership position because of health reasons and because he thinks the party needs fresh faces. Trotman has instead said that he is willing to act as a mentor.

One of the two men, either David Patterson or Khemraj Ramjattan, will be elected as leader of the AFC this Saturday, 11th of June, 2022, during the party’s National Conference.

The AFC political party, formed in the early 2000s, has been dwindling in popularity since joining force with the APNU to form the APNU/AFC coalition government which won the 2015 elections. Former AFC member, Charandass Persaud, crossed the floor and handed victory to the PPP/C in a no-confidence motion tabled by the PPP/C in December 2018. Persaud contended that his party was swallowed up by the PNC faction of the coalition and had little to no say in anything. Persaud was assigned the post of Guyana’s High Commissioner to India after the PPP/C won the March 2, 2020 elections.
