Last updated: July 19, 2022 at 15:43 pmThe peaceful Essequibo Island of Wakenaam in Region 3 has been not so peaceful lately. Several residents of the community have reached out to this publication to voice their frustration over a longstanding noise disturbance which has been causing great distress to the small, close-knit community.
According to the residents, there is a rum shop at Lot 15, Melville, Wakenaam which plays music at a very loud volume from 8 a.m. up to around 10 p.m. The residents say they have spoken to the owner of the rum shop who goes by the name “Meera” and asked her to exercise consideration to those in the neighborhood by lowering the volume of the music. However, their words fell on deaf ears. One of the residents told this publication that the rum shop is only licensed to sell liquor on a take-away basis but flaunts the rules and serves it in the premises.
Several of the residents took the next step and made a report to the Wakenaam Police Station. However, the affected persons were shocked when they were told by the police that they will do nothing about it. The residents say the rum shop is just two minutes away from the Police Station.
One resident said he was told straight in his face by the officer of the Wakenaam Police Station that the police will do nothing about the noise disturbance produced by the said rum shop. Further, we are told that the son of the owner of the rum shop has threatened to kill one of the complainants.
The residents went as far as sending in video proof of the noise produced by the rum shop to this publication.
One resident said he is particularly afflicted because his dad is suffering from age-related illness and the excessive noise is causing the elderly man great discomfort.
Team Guyana, South America wishes to remind all Guyanese that noise disturbance is an offence punishable by law. It carries a fine of up to $750,000.00 and/or up to one year imprisonment. We also wish to remind all officers of the law that they are being paid by the Guyana Government to serve the people of Guyana without fear or favor, and police officers have a legal and moral obligation to uphold and enforce the law.
