Last updated: August 9, 2022 at 11:17 amToday, 9th of August, 2022, we observe The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. This is a worldwide occasion, but it is especially pronounced in our homeland of Guyana, South America where we acknowledge that life would not be just as beautiful without our indigenous counterparts.

August 9th each year is dedicated to raising awareness of the rich and valued contributions of the indigenous peoples to the countries they live in, and to reminding us of the importance of protecting the rights of indigenous peoples at home and around the world.

Indigenous peoples in Guyana are protectors of nature, and the keepers of our forests. They have contributed significantly to the preservation of the natural environment, and have introduced us to many traditional medicines.

Indigenous foods have enriched the lives of all Guyanese, and their crafts lend to the cultural diversity and beauty of Guyana. Casareep, which is used to make pepperpot, is an outstanding gift from our indigenous peoples.

Team Guyana, South America joins the world in observing World Indigenous Day, and invite all Guyanese to reflect on the priceless contributions of our indigenous peoples to the country of Guyana. Let us hereby resolve to protect the rights of indigenous people at home and abroad.
