Guyana’s Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, which administers the Amerindian Heritage Pageant, has issued a formal apology to Miss Amber Andrews and other contestants who were affected by an error in the tallying of scores on the night of the Heritage Pageant. According to the Ministry, the error in the tallying of the judges’ scores resulted in an erroneous crowning of Miss Andrews as well as erroneous placements of other contestants.

After a review of the scores on Sunday, 18th of September, the Ministry announced on Sunday evening that Region 7, and not 5, has won the title of Heritage Queen 2022. This announcement made one group happy, but it also caused great emotional distress and some amount of inconvenience and embarrassment to Miss Andrews who was crowned and later stripped.

Full Statement from the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs

The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs unequivocally apologizes to every delegate who has participated in the Miss Amerindian Heritage Pageant 2022 who has been caught in this unfortunate situation.

It is wholly unfortunate and without any desire on the part of the Ministry that the outcome of the Pageant became controversial.

The Honorable Ministry offers her sincerest and most emphatic apologies to Miss Amber Andrews who has been, without any fault of her own, made to endure unwarranted emotional distress. Apologies are also extended to Miss Andrews’ family and the community of Moraikobai.

The Ministry of Amerindian Affairs also wishes to explicitly state that the judges bear no fault in this unfortunate situation and we reiterate that the error occurred while tallying the scores. The Ministry wishes to thank the Judging Panel who volunteered of their time and skills and accurately and fairly judged the pageant.
