The President of Guyana, Dr. Irfaan Ali, has sent a congratulatory message to his Brazilian counterpart, Lula Da Silva, who recently won the Brazilian Presidency, beating his opponent, Jair Bolsonaro, by a narrow margin.

Lula was President of Brazil from 2003 to 2010, during which time he oversaw the construction of the Takutu River Bridge which connects Guyana to Brazil at Lethem. He was subsequently charged with corruption and jailed for about 1.5 years. After his release from prison, he contested the general elections in October, 2022, beating incumbent Jair Bolsonaro by just about 1% of the votes.

Both Guyana and neighboring Venezuela looks forward to greater cooperation with Lula. Although Lula has a strong connection to Nicolas Maduro, he has been, thus far, very firm in his stance that the Essequibo belongs to Guyana, and not Venezuela.

I am pleased to extend sincere congratulations to His Excellency Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his election to the Presidency of the Federative Republic of Brazil. The Government and people of Guyana join me in extending best wishes for success in the execution of his mandate.
