In the first public demonstration since the end of the elections, President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) expressed thanks to his supporters for the 58 million votes received on Sunday and said that the reaction of supporters who have blocked highways across the country since Sunday, are “the result of indignation and a feeling of injustice of how the last elections took place.” He, however, condemned the acts, saying that the protests cannot follow the methods of the left.

“Peaceful demonstrations will be welcome, but our methods cannot be those of the left, which have always harmed the population, such as invasion of properties, destruction of heritage and curtailment of the right to come and go,” Bolsonaro said in a brief statement of two minutes at Palácio da Alvorada, in which he does not mention the defeat at the polls and does not mention President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), as is tradition.

In the speech, in which he did not answer questions, the president also affirmed that he always followed the Constitution in his actions and praised the election of representatives of the right to Congress and the formation of “various leaders across the country”.

“Even facing the whole system, we overcome the pandemic and the consequences of a war, I have always been labeled undemocratic and, unlike my accusers, I have always played within the four lines of the Constitution,” he said. He added: — As president of the Republic and a citizen, I will continue to fulfill all the commandments of our Constitution.

It was up to the Chief of Staff, Ciro Nogueira, to announce that the government will comply with the law and coordinate the government transition process with the team of President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

“President Jair Messias Bolsonaro authorized me: when invoked, based on the law, we will start the transition process. The PT president (Gleisi Hoffmann), according to her, on behalf of President Lula, said that on Thursday the name of Vice President Geraldo Alckmin will be formalized. We will wait for this to be formalized to comply with the law in our country,” said Ciro.

Bolsonaro was accompanied by almost all the ministers of the federal government, with the exception of the head of Communications, Fábio Faria, who is in São Paulo. Also present were his deputy on his ticket, Walter Braga Netto, and former ministers, such as João Roma (Citizenship), Gilson Machado (Tourism) and Rogério Marinho (Regional Development). Vice President Hamilton Mourão did not attend.

Of the children, only deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) was at his father’s side at the time of the speech. Coordinator of the reelection campaign, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) did not attend, nor did Councilman Carlos Bolsonaro (Republicans-RJ), responsible for his father’s social media.
