The dreaded monkeypox virus has already touched down on Guyanese soil infecting a public servant who worked on public transportation. That person is currently in isolation, but it is not clear how many other persons may be infected.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has today, 23rd of July, 2022, declared the monkeypox outbreak a Global Health Emergency. This means that a coordinated international response is needed to contain the virus.
Monkeypox is spread from person to person through close contact with an infected person. This includes, but is not limited to, mouth-to-mouth, face to face, mouth to skin, and skin to skin contact. Most obviously, sexual contact with an infected person is likely to result in transmission.
Brazil has 106 confirmed cases of monkeypox, according to a survey by the Ministry of Health. The majority (75) were registered in São Paulo. Next is Rio de Janeiro, with 20 cases. In Minas Gerais, there were three cases of the disease. In Ceará, Paraná and Rio de Grande do Sul there were two records in each state.
